Back Bay Brewing

614 Norfolk Ave., Virginia Beach, Va

Backroom Brewery

150 Ridgemont Road Middletown, VA 22645

Backroom Brewery is a boutique farm brewery nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah River Valley. We began as a herb farm, growing culinary and medicinal herbs for the garden center trade. Our herb farm, Sunflower Cottage, grows 120,000 potted herb plants each spring from seeds and cuttings to sell to other garden centers and to our own customers. In the fall of 2012, we built our hops field. After all, hops are the herbs that flavor beer. Hops provide the bitter balance to the sweet malt that feeds yeast, which ferments beer. In 2013 we began the process of creating an ordinance in Warren County to accomodate farm breweries. By late spring, the process was complete and Backroom Brewery became the first farm brewery in the Northern Shenandoah Valley. Our first hop harvest in August of 2013 was bountiful. We were brewing in small batches and planning our brewery construction. In the spring of 2014 we began construction and finished our brewery building plus equipment installation by July of 2014. Life is good and we are living the dream.

Belmont Farm Distillery

13490 Cedar Run Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, United States

It's been a long time since Tim and Chuck first met. It was 1999, and Tim had heard about Chuck and his distillery. Tim invited Chuck to be the guest speaker at his Moonshiners Jamborie in Chatham, Virginia, and the rest is history. They hit it off immediately and their similar passions have led to a great friendship ever since. A while later, Discovery Channel would also hear about Chuck and his distilling of legal moonshine. Intrigued by the history and legality of moonshine, Discovery Channel would go on to find illegal moonshiners distilling and running moonshine in remote country areas. This, of course, led to what we now know and love as the show Moonshiners. Tim Smith happened to be one of the folks featured in the new Discovery Channel show. When it came time for Tim to became legal, he naturally thought of his good friend, Chuck Miller. He and Chuck worked together to bring Tim's famous moonshine recipe to the world. Climax Moonshine was officially born and began being marketed in the USA and overseas. Belmont Farm Distillery now produces a large amount of Climax product and Tim still finds time to visit the farm to talk moonshine and the good ol' days!

Big Ugly Brewing

1296 Battlefield Boulevard South, Chesapeake, VA, United States

Big Ugly has it’s roots in home brewing. Jim Lantry became interested when his wife gave him a Mr. Beer kit for Christmas more than 12 years ago. He moved on to brewing with malt extract before switching entirely to grain. Brewing was a social event in the neighborhood, and Jim and Shawn Childers began formulating different beer concepts for future brews. After an understandable learning curve – and also having the experience of collectively sampling more than 4,000 different beers through a neighborhood tasting club – improvements started to show in the beers to the point the two idealized about opening a brewery. In February of 2015 their ideas came to fruition, and they opened Chesapeake’s first brewery, which is garage-centric due to Jim and Shawn’s collection of vintage vehicles. The brewery’s namesake comes from Shawn’s 1955 Chevy panel truck. The space was designed with exposed equipment so guests know they are in a working brewery.

Catoctin Creek

The name "Catoctin" is a regional name. Pronounced Ka-TOCK-tin, the name derives from the Indian tribal name "Kittocton" which, legend has it, meant "place of many deer". Catoctin describes a range of mountains and the creek which flows picturesquely into the Potomac River and Chesapeake Watershed. At Catoctin Creek, we believe in high quality food and spirits. Organic means higher quality: grain and fruit, sourced locally when possible, free of pesticides and chemical additives that would come through in the spirits we produce. Sure, it is more difficult to produce organically, but the results speak for themselves.

Maltese Brewing Company

11047 Pierson Dr Suite B Fredericksburg, VA 22408

Maltese Brewing Company was founded and started by Bobby Cook and Joseph Smith. Two firefighters with a passion for craft beer, which brought them together. When the two heroes were not saving homeless babies from their burning mansions, they loved getting together to create delicious home brew. A past time that the two could share while their little ones were running a muck in the house. Many home brews and band-aids later (don't worry they're professionals) the two decided that they could make better use of their time by finding part time jobs. After many more brewing sessions to discuss this further, they decided to sell their beer! Thus the creation of the world's most awesome nano-brewery began...

Old Bust Head

7134 Lineweaver Road Vint Hill, VA 20187

Old Bust Head Brewing Company is named for a bygone crossroads in the rolling hills of Fauquier County, Virginia. The locals who dubbed the corner ‘Bust Head’ enjoyed not only the potent libations brewed there, but also a little good humor. Some say the locals came up with the nickname when a neighbor fell off his horse after ‘overindulging’ at the corner shop one evening. Others say the locals who drank there were partial to Saturday night fights, or that they just fell down and busted their heads on the rough old country road. While we're serious about the art of crafting exceptional beer, and about our passion for our community and our environment, we salute those past and present who keep things playfully in perspective and make life a bit more enjoyable for all of us.

Right Turn, Clyde Brewing

300 A Main Street Narrows, Virginia 24124

In 2009 two kids decided to try their hand at making beer. They did…they made terrible disgusting beer. One of them was a school teacher, while the other worked in HVAC…not really a hotbed for master brewers. But they bought some books, found some more knowledgeable friends, and tried again. This time they made tolerable beer. From that moment they were hooked. After successfully making several award winning homebrews, Corey Thompson and Jon Kidd thought they would try their hand at the big batch world. People seem to enjoy their beer, and after all the worst case scenario was only bankruptcy. So through luck, nepotism, begging, hooking, and many other immoral acts, they were able to procure a building, a loan, and a system. The rest was just hard work and good looks. Now the 2.5 barrel brew system is in use as often as possible. Both brewers maintain a “real” full time job, so that isn’t as often as they would like. And they would certainly love to have you stop in for a visit to the tasting room or just shoot us an email to find out where you can get your hands on some of our yummy brew.

  2. I read the article in this month’s Growler about Beer Distribution in Virginia. How are the Beer Distribution Laws not a violation of the Antitrust laws? How is ABInBev paying a commission to favor their beer not an antitrust violation? To even try and defend the beer distribution laws is appalling. There was nothing that was stated in their defense that couldn’t be accomplished without the distributors. The Beer Distributors in Virginia are an abomination, they limit choice and make it difficult for the smaller retailers like Grape & Gourmet and Bottlebox to compete. It is difficult for them to carry unique beers that differentiate themselves and they don’t have the buying power of Total Wines, so can’t compete on price.
The laws limit competition and restrict trade, Stalin would be proud.
