It’s a little bit music. It’s a little bit comic con. But it’s all StarFire. Next month, O’Connor Brewing Company will host a festival that merges the worlds of modern-day bards, gamers and cosplayers alike.
Since moving to its spacious new location in May 2014, O’Connor has hosted a wide variety of events, from art and crafts shows to its anniversary party, O’Connoroo.
But the StarFire Festival on April 22 marks something new for the brewery and the area. It will feature 12 hours of continuous music from some of the best acts around, as well as video game tournaments and demonstrations, cosplay contests, a local comic book showcase, and live painting.
There will also be workshops, live action role-playing, food trucks and, of course, a wide selection of O’Connor beer.
“There hasn’t been anything like this locally before,” says Michael Mahgerefteh, event coordinator.
Galaxy Dynamite headlines the festival. The Norfolk trio was recently named the area’s Best Psychedelic Band by Veer Magazine. And O’Connor will offer a special brew for the fete: a tart, golden ale, infused with passion fruit and Galaxy hops called “Galaxy Dynamite.”
Proceeds will be donated to SMILE (Samantha Makes It A Little Easier), a Norfolk-based nonprofit that provides money for hearing aids, wheelchair lifts, and therapeutic tricycles for children impacted by life-threatening conditions.
“We love giving back to the community,” says Hannah Serrano, O’Connor’s marketing director. “Hosting this great event was a no-brainer.”
The StarFire Festival is free for all ages. Visit galaxydynamite.com/starfire-festival for more information.
